Pretoria – The fifth man believed to be a prime suspect in the murder of two toddlers in Diepsloot has been arrested.
Police on Thursday released the man’s identikit and offered a R100 000 reward for information that would lead to his arrest and successful prosecution. The man was arrested in Alexandra, Johannesburg, this morning, after he had been on the run since the discovery of the toddlers’ bodies on Tuesday.
The toddlers, who were cousins aged two and three years, were found dead in a public toilet after they went missing on Saturday.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the country, with residents in Diepsloot venting their anger by taking to the streets in protest on Tuesday.
Gauteng police spokesperson Neville Malila says the four suspects arrested earlier this week will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today. They have been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of rape and one count of abduction.
Meanwhile in a separate incident, police say the mother of the two toddlers, who were found dead in an old building near Zonkizizwe on the East Rand, is now facing murder charges.
It was earlier suspected that the girls could have died of food poisoning, but police say the exact cause of death will be known once the post-mortem is conducted later today.
