President Jacob Zuma visited ailing former president Nelson Mandela at Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital today.

According to presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj, Mandela’s condition remains ‘critical but stable’. Former president Mandela has spent well over 3 weeks in hospital since he was admitted on 8 June as a result of a recurrent lung infection.

President Zuma assured the nation that the ailing statesman is in good hands, saying “we appreciate all the love and compassion. Madiba is receiving the best medical care from a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals who are at his bedside around the clock”.

The president has also urged South Africans to give 67 minutes of their time to community services on Mandela Day (18 July) which will be held under the theme: “Take action; inspire change; make every day a Mandela Day”.
