Marikana negotiations postponed

A shameful moment for a 12-year-old democracy

Pretoria – Stakeholders in the Marikana Lonmin Platinum mine on Monday postponed negotiations to allow parties more time to peruse the report-back presented by unions and Lonmin Platinum mine workers’ representatives.

The stakeholders that were set to meet include the Department of Labour (DoL) and the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

The parties met after the broader negotiations were postponed last week Thursday to allow for consultation with the workers.

Following extensive discussions on the report-back, the parties agreed to postpone the meeting to Wednesday to further deliberate on the report.

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant is part of the Inter-Ministerial Committee delegated by President Jacob Zuma to look into the events surrounding the Marikana tragedy.

Oliphant had already met with union representatives in a bid to defuse the tensions at mines in Marikana. – SAnews
